The Literal Power of Coffee Through Recycling

Learn how your coffee grounds can take on a new life.

There’s a common phrase about the impossibility of having your cake and eating it too - that two delightful things cannot exist at the same time. But where would be the fun in that? Here at Nespresso, we believe that it’s not only possible to have two pleasant things existing simultaneously, but necessary. To have great tasting, high quality coffee,

The capsule. At first glance it may be easy to feel a twinge of guilt when placing it into your Nespresso machine. Afterall, it seems superfluous to have a byproduct of your morning cappuccino or afternoon Ristretto. But this is where our choice to use aluminium is not only intentional, it’s sustainable. Our aluminium capsules aren’t just recyclable, they are infinitely recyclable. That’s right. Your morning cappuccino or afternoon Ristretto may one day become a bicycle frame, a segment of a car, and part of a drink can.

And while much of the focus may be on the outside of the capsule, we believe that a lot of the beauty actually lies within. The used coffee grounds are broken down and used in various ways, and countries all over the globe are recognising the literal power of coffee.

“The sustainability program with Nespresso is surpassed by no one…they have set this up so that if you are responsible and you want to participate in truly recycling: it is very easy to do.” – George Clooney

In Switzerland, used coffee grounds are selected to supply energy to the Henniez water bottling plant and to heat homes surrounding the biogas plants, before being sent off to farming communities as compost. In Italy, Spain and Portugal, this compost is used in various productive ways, such as growing rice to be donated to banks. When we really come face to face with the possibilities behind coffee, we feel confident about its sustainability. Its story doesn't have to end with your sip.

We also believe that caring for our planet is a shared responsibility. In order to ensure our capsules' infinitely long life, both inside and out, we have created a recycling program that is simple and efficient. Just drop off your used capsules at one of over 6,000 collection points, dispose of them at your nearest Nespresso boutique, or wait for us to come collect them. Recycling should no longer be a luxury, nor should it be a hassle. Find which method works best for you here, and together we can do our part to care for our planet, while drinking the perfect cup too.
